HECUA: Agriculture and Justice: Building a Sustainable Food System

For a program description, sample syllabus, example internships and more please visit HECUA's Agriculture and Justice Progam Page.

Course Schedule:

Agriculture and Justice is offered every SPRING semester. The seminars meet:
  • Fridays*
  • 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.*
*A few field trips will occur during evenings and weekends throughout the semester. These dates will be available at the start of the semester so you can adjust your schedule accordingly.

Credit Information:

U of M students enroll in two HECUA courses totaling 8 credits:
  • HECU 3595 - Environment and Agriculture: Agroecosystems in Context - 4 credits
  • HECU 3596 - Justice and the US Food System - 4 credits
Due to the interrelated nature of the content and field experiences, you are required to take both courses simultaneously (in other words, you cannot sign up for only one of the courses). You may take classes at the U of M as long as their schedule does not conflict with your HECUA class schedule. This gives you the flexibility to continue making progress on campus while engaging in an immersive, experiential, community-based program.

It is possible to fulfill major and/or minor requirements through HECUA. (Contact your advisor or the CCEL office for details). If the credits cannot be applied to major/minor requirements, oftentimes students use these HECU 3000-level credits to fulfill "upper-division, outside of major requirements."

Optional (but recommended) Internship:

Students may choose to do an internship CONCURRENTLY (during spring semster) or AFTER (during the summer) the above courses.

You will earn credit for the internship but have 2 registration options:
  • HECU 3597 - 4 credits - 100 hour minimum internship

  • OR

  • HECU 3598 - 8 credits - 200 hour minimum internship

Tuition Information:

The fee for the 8-credit spring (2017) coursework is $4,960. If you choose to take additional U of M courses, tuition is assessed on a per-credit basis (visit OneStop for current tuition rates). Additional fees may apply.

The program fees for the summer internship are:
  • $1720 for 4-credit internship
  • $3440 for 8-credit internship

Financial Aid Information:

Most financial aid applies. Students enrolled in full-time (13 credits minimum) during the spring semester (8 credits from the HECUA program plus additional U of M courses) may receive financial aid. During summer, some student are eligible for financial aid (but must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits). To learn what you may qualify for, contact Amanda Temple in the Office for Student Finance.

There are several scholarships available through HECUA. CLA students enrolled in a HECUA internship may also apply for the CLA Internship Scholarship. CEHD students enrolled in a HECUA internship may apply for the CEHD Internship Grant.
