HECUA: City Arts
(offered every spring semester)

To apply, please set up an appointment with the City Arts advisor (contact info below). The application deadline is December 1.

City Arts explores how art and culture impact communities, and how creative work (like performance, writing, visual art, music and interpretation) can address important social issues. Throughout the semester you'll meet a variety of Twin Cities artists, educators and arts advocates. You'll also attend performances, films and art installations.

The Twin Cities has a vibrant arts community. By becoming part of it, you'll learn how creative practices of all kinds can be used as tools for social change and civic engagement. Through seminars, field visits, and a professional internship, you'll address these questions:

  • What roles do art and artists play in shaping cultures and communities?
  • What economic, social, and political forces affect art's creation and creators?
  • Who funds the arts, how is funding decided, and what impact does that have?
  • What is my role in creating the world in which I want to live?

  • Credit Information:

U of M students earn 16 upper-division ID (Inter-Departmental) credits through this spring semester program. Many U of M departments also award major/minor credit to participating students. (Contact your advisor or the CCLC for details).

The City Arts program fulfills these Liberal Education Requirements:
  • Other Humanities Core
  • Citizenship and Public Ethics Theme
  • Cultural Diversity Theme

  • City Arts is a full-time program. Taking additional courses during the semester is not recommended. Students in the program spend two days per week in Reading and Field Seminars, and three days per week at an arts-based internship site.

    Tuition Information:

Tuition for the City Arts semester program (during the 2007-2008 academic year) is $7400. Additional application fees may also apply. Most financial aid applies, and there are several scholarships available to U of M students. Contact the City Arts advisor for more details (see below).
